Tying the Doppelganger Pheasant Tail
Просмотров 9 тыс.2 месяца назад
Like most tyers, I'm constantly tinkering with new materials to see if they improve patterns or make them easier to tie without sacrificing their effectiveness. When we started carrying Semperfli Micro Fritz in the shop, I saw how thin the diameter was and realized that it had the potential to be able to work as a body for smaller patterns. I also noticed that there were several colors that wer...
Tying the Blue Steel Perdigon
Просмотров 11 тыс.2 месяца назад
Last winter (January 2023) I was tying a bunch of variations of perdigons on one of those typical experimental January tying nights. I tried out some new tinsels including the iridescent blue Perdigon Tinsel from Semperfli. As I fished each of these variations over the next few months, there was one that kept setting itself apart during my days afield. Trout seemed willing to move to the blue p...
Tying the Pinky Perdigon

The Pinky Perdigon was the brainchild of my Fly Fishing Team USA mate Jack Arnot at the 2023 World Fly Fishing Championship in Slovakia. It worked very well for the grayling and trout in Slovakia and has been surprisingly good at home in the USA since. It has been an important pattern in the rotation in each of the interregional tournaments and the national championships that I have fished in 2...
How to Tie the Foam Front End Loader Caddis
Просмотров 6 тыс.5 месяцев назад
This video is the first in a series of tying tutorials for flies I added to my boxes in 2023. The Foam Front End Loader Caddis substitutes several materials used in the original Front End Loader Caddis and adds a foam back in order to increase buoyancy. This fly floats just a bit better and holds up a tungsten bead nymph a little easier than the original pattern. I've still caught plenty of fis...
Dropper Tag Knot Q and A Follow Up

Many of those comments were pretty similar so instead of replying with the same answers I figured a follow up video would best. In this video I address what is a dropper tag and why I use them. How to Tie a Dropper Tag With the Figure of 8 Knot

In this tutorial, I teach you how to tie the Figure of 8 Knot. You can use it for a tippet to tippet knot and also for creating dropper tags in your tippet. A bit over a year ago our former shop manager Kramer Bookman started testing the Figure of 8 Knot for his dropper tags. He found they were consistently stronger than a Surgeon's Knot. I'm always keen to give a new knot a go so I started tes...
Fishing a Pool: Back to Front, Near to Far, and Shallow to deep
Просмотров 19 тыс.8 месяцев назад
As the water temperature drops in the fall and through the winter, trout usually concentrate into slower and deeper holding water. This is an energy saving tactic at a time when their metabolic rate drops, and the activity of their food sources is also sparce. If you have been used to being able to nymph the faster water for fairly easily caught trout, it is important to shift your strategies w...

Three steps to keep your CDC dry flies floating

Id imagine that it is easier...
Is there any conversion chart anywhere that one could use for reference?
There are so many hooks that is tough to build a reference chart for them all. We do have measurements in a chart for each hook in their product description on our site. If you note the measurements, it is easy to compare them between specific hooks you are interested in.
does making three turns add to the strenght of the knot ?
@@CarolPatterson-o9v not in my experience and it also makes it harder to seat the knot from all sides evenly.
This is interesting. The differences in hooks is confusing. I agree a comparison of hook gap would also be good. I always thought a 1XL long hooks was one size longer so #12 gap with a #10 shank, but I could be mistaken.
Unfortunately I get sea sick on a floating dock so a drift boat is a no no for me ! Love the video and I will stick to wading !
Devin, I couldn’t help but notice pretty much all your nymphs with a hackle collar are cdc. I know the blowtorch was originally tied with hen hackle but in recent years and formulas they’re all cdc. Curious to know if you favor cdc for your nymphs with a hackled collar and why?
@@azurenscens yes if I’m adding soft hackle these days I generally use cdc. It moves more and folds into the fly when sinking. It’s also easy to break to the desired length with fingertips.
I could so imagine the rower getting annoyed and pushing me in..
Hope you tipped the guy fat for all the hard rowing.
Thanks for the video.
I hope you enjoyed it.

Great Video Devin! Very informative
Glad you liked it!
Over your right shoulder, what is that clamped on the rail of your boat? A Bimini quick disconnect?
@@Erik-pf7gm it’s a drogue to slow down the drift. You can find out about it in my new stillwater book or in the other stillwater videos I’ve done on this channel.
I did it on the Green, works great
That was the first river I thought of to try this
Wearing that dumb vest thing in a drift boat is almost gayer than euro nymphing. Stay off the Bighorn and GTFO of Wyoming.
This was a great video, Devin! I often get the same question, but I don't fish from a drift boat ever. Now I will send everyone to this video who asks! Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it. Hopefully it will help when others ask you the same question.
i only contact nymph on a boat unless there is a big dry fly hatch
Great tutorial, Devin. My dad and I have been doing this on the White River in Southern Missouri for ~6 years. You're right, it is a team effort! The person on the oars plays as big of a role in success as the angler (maybe even bigger). You're spot on with your suggestions for setup when drifting vs wade fishing (longer rod is helpful, slightly heavier tippet/leader, longer tippet length, and slightly heaver (or sometimes a lot heavier) bead size to cover variable water depth and less than ideal drifts situations). -Cheers
Glad you enjoyed the tutorial and thanks for the feedback.
What reel is that?
I fished both the Peux Fulgor and the OCR Bighorn in this video.
Having never nymphed from a boat and not likely to in this lifetime it was still a great video. One question. If you could only have one nymphing rod what would you choose? Make and weight. Thanks
Im not the right Devin, but I’d put my bet on a 10’6” 3wt. Dries, nymphs, small streamers, no problem! Big enough to horse 20” fish, finesse enough to detect bites. I’d also recommend echo rods if you’re just getting into it, try a carbon or shadow x!
That's a pretty tough question. I don't think I could narrow it to one specifically but currently my three favorite all around nymph rods are the Soldarini Hydropsyche 10' 6" 2/3, the Hardy Ultralite LL 10' 8" 0/2, and the T and T Contact II 10' 9" 3 weight.
@@devonbustard1623 thanks for the reply "the other Devon" all information is appreciated!! And good food for thought.

Yes and it’s kind of boring
Yup. I do it regularly. Fun way to fish
Works incredibly well actually!
Yes you can
Great tips... Thank you from the U.K. @MarkTwrites
Glad you enjoyed it.
Is it 2 or 3 turns? Video shows 3 but you’re counting 2. I’ve tried it both ways and 2 appears to be correct. I’ve been using the knot for a while now and unfortunately I’ve had a number of break-offs on big fish, including another last night. Just wondering if I’m doing something wrong. Thanks for any guidance. Love your stuff.
@@paullyon9731 you can do either 2 or 3 turns. It’s apparently referred to as a seaguar knot if you do 3 turns.
Does the 1wt have a fragile tip? I’ve had some issues with my echo shadow II 2wt tips breaking but no issues with the 3wt version. Also how does the 1wt do at casting a flyline for dry fly fishing? I need a rod that can handle 8x for a local tail water. Mostly nymphing but I’d want to be able to throw a furled leader on to fish small dries as well.
The Diamondbacks, including the 1 weight, have been very durable compared to most euro rods in our experience. As long as you pair it with the correct delicate taper dry fly line and use good technique, the rod should fish dry flies well also.
Very helpful thank you
Glad it helped. Happy Fishing.
That's my go-to for dropper tags as well... have known it as the Orvis Tippet Knot. Love your tying approach. Clearly easier and faster than what I was doing. Any reason to not use it in place of a surgeons knot for just adding tippet? I expect it's stronger but I'm not sure. Definitely sticking with blood knots for leader building.
No reason you can't use it in place of a surgeon's knot. I use it in place of the surgeon's knot for adding tippet whether I'm making a dropper tag or not.
Great content. Some of your music is annoying.
Is this still the easiest way to tie a squirmy?
It still works but normally I just slide the worm onto the hook with some super glue these days.
@@tacticalflyfisher3817 sorry i dont understand?
Dude! That is a cool fly! I've been looking for a fly that uses squirmy woormies!
Thanks! We were looking for something similar with added durability.
What hooks are you using on this fly ?
Hook: Fulling Mill 5125 #18-24 (these run two sizes large), Fulling Mill 5045 or Fulling Mill 5140 sizes 12-20, or Dohiku 303 sizes 12-18
Thanks, I was thinking about the 10’ 3w. After seeing you I’m looking at the 10’ 2w.
Are you using a Wychwood parabolic drogue in this video? I’m looking to use a drogue with my drift boat. I’ve heard some people prefer conical drogues with drift boats due to the wind catching the bow more than the stern. However I’d like a drogue that I could use on a drift boat, as well as a flat-bottom aluminum boat. If you have a recommendation, I’d love to hear it!
What type net and size
I have to ask - what is the intro music please? I know it but can’t remember what it is or who wrote it.
That is a good question. Kramer, the former manager, selected this music, but I don't know what it is other than pretty epic for a worm fly tying video...
Thanks for the informative talk at the beginning. Dense and to-the-point. A question, though -- on the first couple fish you catch, you seem well close-enough to tightline that area effectively. Are you choosing to float the sighter there just for demonstration purposes, or would you indeed choose to float rather than tight-line at that close of a range? Thank you.
Nice video Devin. A couple questions: Why did FIPS-MOUCHE ban the squirmy wormy? And how does the DNA worm compare in robustness to chenille worms?
Todd, I'm sure there is a good reason here, or none at all as to why they won't allow it. We'd say that the DNA worm is as durable as a Chenille worm, but it's like asking how many licks it takes to get to the center of a tootsie-pop. We've never had one last long enough to know. All jokes aside, we love this fly for it's durability.
So....about the fly fishing team. What is it? How does ine join? Is it fun? Is there a chance for compensation? Who di i bribe, sleep with, or kill to do it?
Check out the two podcasts I did on the Newb and the Knower. They will tell you all about it. You can also check out the team site at flyfishingteamusa.com and the site where the competitions are posted at flycomps.com
The depths to which people will sink to catch a fish... Real 'sportsmen' they are... You'll never see one of these in my fly box.
Fully agree with a single Davy for small flies - a very small and secure knot. I haven’t ever used a clinch knot, but certainly used a Double Davy on tippet rings and larger flies. The extra turn does not make the knot massive and adds just a little more security. Your mentor will of course told you, that droppers must be ‘fixed’, in fly fishing competitions where a designated fly line and leader are used. Sliding droppers were a fundamental part of Polish style fishing, but even they had to adapt for competitions! Outside of competitions, anything goes!😉
Excellent video for someone like myself who is very new to EN. What sort of length leader would you generally fish in water like that?
Here are a couple of videos for the leaders I tend to fish. However, as an angler newer to Euro nymphing, you may want to fish a thicker version to help with your casting until you are comfortable going thinner. ruclips.net/video/3xlLbnvnsfc/видео.htmlsi=V9BLtqrVntEbUKCg ruclips.net/video/GTcJcPMyBkk/видео.htmlsi=HdwVIf_tKWcTEusk
Great video! What are you using to attach the magnet to the net so it swivel like it does? Thanks
I normally use 1/4” paracord to tie the magnet to the net and then I make sure to singe the knot well.
The Zoolander!
Random question. do you or have you considered using solder to attach your slotted beads? Do you have an opinion on it? I saw someone do it and tried it some. Felt like it kept me from fraying my tying thread on beads that had a sharp edge sometimes and added extra weight.... but it probably makes my flies slightly more inconsistent weight wise.
Haven’t seen the need to do that myself.
That's gonna be handy to make my Pts more durable
Gotta handle some toothy NZ brown trout.
I was excited when I heard about this fly. Thanks for sharing. On a different note, do you have any Caddis patterns that you recommend for a Grannom larva and pupa?
What’s the sink rate comparable to with regards to your other patterns?
It’s slower than perdigons but faster than any of my cdc soft hackle nymphs.
So - I read the description & see this is going to be in the FM catalogue soon. Is there a reason for that/is there any advantage to this over a traditional pheasant tail/frenchie? I can definitely see the advantage from a tying perspective (guide flies=quick & easy) but want to know if there’s anything differentiating this from a fishing perspective.
The main advantage is durability from my perspective.
Watching your tying videos convinced me that fly tying doesn’t have to be as difficult as I had built it up in my head to be. I’ve had great success with all of your patterns and I’m sure this one won’t be an exception. Thanks!
Happy tying!
